Eliza is my second attempt at writing a ‘real’ Mac application (this is fun). Of course, any hints (suggestions, bug reports, etc.) would be greatly appreciated!
Eliza requires Macintalk (in the System folder) and System version 4.1 or better.
The program itself is self-explanatory. Select ‘Start Interview’ when you are ready to match wits with a dumb (?) computer. Eliza will make a statement and then wait for your reply. Type your response (preferably a single sentence) followed by a carriage return. (Be sure to enter your reply at the end of the text.)
Use the ‘Speech Settings…’ menu choice to modify the Macintalk speech characteristics. I left the ‘Sex’ and ‘Language’ choices enabled even though they don’t yet do anything (except demonstrate how to create a pop-menu).
The ‘Demo’ command will initiate a thoroughly pointless conversation between the Mac and itself. This started out as a ‘Presidential Debate’ command, but I didn’t finish the program soon enough…
I used the wonderful Turbo Pascal‚Ñ¢ compiler and would recommend it highly to any other novice programmer. The documents alone are worth the price of the software! (Same for Turbo Tutor‚Ñ¢.)
If you would like copies of the Turbo and RMaker source codes (heavily commented), just send a disk (preferably NOT blank) and a self addressed stamped envelope to:
